There is a huge argument in the natural hair community about whether or not it is possible to get fuller hair. While some argue that it is impossible to change the density of your hair, others believe that there are things you can do to get fuller hair even if you never had one.
Hair density is simply the number of strands on your hair. It is the measure of how much hair you have on your head. It is what determines how full or scanty your hair looks. There are three types of hair densities: high, medium, and low.
A person with a medium/normal density of hair has 2,200 hairs per square inch. A person with a low-density scalp may have lesser than the said number per square inch and a person with a high-density scalp will have more than 2,200 hairs per square inch.
It is important to note that the thickness of your hair strand is also a contributing factor in how full or scanty your hair looks.
Is it possible to change your hair density and thickness? Not entirely! There is no way you can increase the number of hair follicles on your scalp.
However, it turns out that the trick to fuller and thicker hair is stimulating and supporting natural hair growth. While it might not become a hundred percent full overnight, making sure your hair follicles are healthy and growing is a great way to improve your hair’s fullness.

1. Limit the use of heat
Turn down the heat! You want to stay away from heat as much as possible. Heat causes dryness, breakage, and thinning of your hair. If your hair was once full and all of a sudden became scanty, check if the possible cause is heat damage.
If you have to stretch your hair, go for heatless methods of stretching your hair such as twists, Bantu knots, or African threading. If you must use the heat, ensure you apply a heat protectant before using heat on your hair. But the best way is to stay away from heat totally.
2. Do daily scalp massages
According to research, scalp massage increases hair thickness by stretching the cells of hair follicles. This, in turn, stimulates the follicles to produce thicker hair. It also thought that a scalp massage may help dilate blood vessels beneath the skin thereby encouraging hair growth. Try doing a scalp massage two to three times daily.
3. Inversion method/Yoga
This is a popular remedy suggested by many natural hair bloggers for hair growth. The inversion method involves inverting the head upside-down at a comfortable angle and massaging the scalp with warm oil. This is said to work on the grounds that supporting blood flow to the scalp causes hair growth.
4. A healthy diet and plenty water
Poor hair growth is usually the result of poor nutrition. You’ve probably heard this saying that you are what you eat. That’s the truth! Your hair is what you eat.
According to foxnews.com, thick, full, and healthy hair is possible with a diet rich in certain foods that are not only good for your hair but for your overall health, too. Drinking enough water is also important.
Avocado contains copper that helps build up the collagen and elastin of the skin that holds up the hair follicles.
Pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc which helps in cellular turnover, cell division, and growth that helps form keratin (a protein that makes up the hair). Bell peppers are loaded with vitamin C that is great for mopping out harmful free radicals that hinder hair growth.
Other foods you can eat for fuller hair include; berries, flaxseeds, figs, soybeans, kelp, eggs, mango, leafy greens, etc.
5. Using castor oil or grapeseed oil
Castor oil has so many benefits one of which is thickening the hair strands. It is a great natural remedy to stimulate hair growth in bald areas. Try using it alone to do scalp massages or incorporating it in an oil mix or adding it to your deep conditioner mask.
Grapeseed oil contains fatty acids that make hair thicker. When used in combination with bananas which are rich in vitamins and potassium, it stimulates blood flow in the scalp and protects the scalp resulting in longer, thicker, and fuller hair.
There are also other oils you can use such as argan oil, jojoba oil, and coconut oil.
6. Doing hair rinses
Green tea has been shown to be so good in so many ways. It has an anti-androgen effect, which helps reduce the risk of baldness. Black tea is another good tea that can be used as a hair rinse. It contains caffeine that helps promote hair growth.
Rice water has shown a lot of results in making the hair thicker, fuller and longer. Try doing hair rinses every week for the best results.
7. Doing a protein treatment
A protein treatment is a conditioning treatment that adds protein to the cuticle layer of your hair strands. This strengthens your hair comma making it a lot stronger and less likely to get damaged later on. This may not necessarily make your hair fuller but it would strengthen your hair strands making it less prone to breakage.

Biotin is probably the most popular hair growth remedy and it works. Iron, on the other hand, aids oxygen circulation in the blood. We’ve already established that blood circulation to the scalp is an important factor in hair growth. Taking supplements rich in biotin and iron would go a long way in giving you a healthy, full, and thicker hair.

Indian women are famous for their beautiful long and voluminous hair, yes, those you admire on television. Their secret is incorporating ayurvedic herbs into their haircare. Ayurvedic herbs are high in iron, gallic acid, antioxidants, and carotene content that improve blood circulation around the scalp which stimulates hair growth.
Henna contains lawsone that adheres to the hair strands filling up loose areas on your hair strand and giving it fullness. Chebe powder is another herb that has the ability to create fuller hair. There is the alma, fenugreek, hibiscus and so many other ayurvedic herbs.
You can do ayurvedic treatment twice a month. You can do it as a deep condition mask or make an oil extract of the herbs to use daily.
The secret to thicker and fuller natural hair is actually healthier hair. While you may not be able to create some new hair strands on your scalp, you can boost your hair health to get some results. A proper healthy hair regimen and incorporating these tips shared above can be the game-changer for your hair.
